Arts and Crafts and Folk Crafts (Art Textile)
In all three areas, design developments are created within the framework of the discipline "Artistic Design", the program of which is built on the principle of sequential study of the material: from performing the simplest propaedeutic exercises in the 1st year to the integrated design of textiles and works of art in senior courses. Students work on course projects of dress, furniture, decorative fabrics, design decorative panels and tapestries for residential and public interiors, etc. As part of a six-year study, students carry out design developments in the field of a comprehensive solution of the stage space using artistic textiles, as well as intermission and stage curtains. In addition, they make experimental products from non-traditional materials using author's techniques, create three-dimensional compositions, art objects. Specialized disciplines have been introduced into the curricula, which study the principles of operation of general-purpose graphics packages and special textile computer programs.
Course and diploma design is based on the material base of the department - a weaving workshop, manual and mechanical machines, a chemical laboratory, workshops for silk-screen printing, fabric painting, computer design.
Students work on course projects of dress, furniture, decorative fabrics, offer solutions for fabric complexes for residential and public interiors. Particular attention is paid to panel projects made in various textile techniques: batik (free painting), photo film printing, appliqué, embroidery, felt, as well as tapestry projects, which are then created in the material using the hand weaving technique. As part of the six-year training, design developments are created in the field of theatrical and decorative art: intermission curtains, soft theatrical scenery, fabrics for stage costumes, complex solutions for stage spaces using artistic textiles, etc.
In the learning process, much attention is paid to the basics of artistic production. In the workshops of the department, classes are held on heeling, printing, painting (cold and hot batik), hand and shaft weaving, chemical technology, materials science, fabric design, weaving theory, patronizing, computer graphics, etc.
Diploma design and execution in the material of products is carried out on the basis of the acquired knowledge in the field of artistic textiles and its technologies. The student's independent work begins with the choice of a theme and performance technique, which include the development of ensembles and assortments, as well as complexes of dress and decorative fabrics, tapestries, monumental and decorative panels for public interiors, and a series of chamber panels. In addition, under the guidance of teachers, experimental products are made from non-traditional materials, author's techniques are used, three-dimensional compositions, installations, and art objects are created.
Nowadays, the design of textile patterns is impossible without computer technology, therefore, within the framework of specialized disciplines, the principles of operation of general-purpose graphics packages and special textile computer programs are studied.
In addition to working with the material in the workshops of the department, a number of course and graduation projects are carried out at the factories of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region. The department has established long-term cooperation with the factory of jacquard fabrics JSC "Uzor" (Leningrad region, Vyritsa village). Over the past five years, the department has created design developments for tufted carpets with their further implementation in the material. The department is constantly striving to establish interaction with textile industries and design studios to conduct training and production practices at their sites. Much attention is paid to the implementation of course and semester design developments in accordance with the technical and competitive assignments received from real companies represented on the Russian textile market.
Within the framework of the magistracy, in addition to creative disciplines, a program of research work is being implemented. Teachers and graduate students participate in Russian and international scientific conferences, seminars, round tables, master classes.
Teachers and students actively participate in all-Russian and international exhibitions, biennials, seminars and symposiums. Their work has been repeatedly marked by both domestic and international prizes and diplomas.
